What is a CNP?

A Certified Nutritional Practitioner (CNP) is a designation awarded by the Institute of Holistic Nutrition (IHN). IHN offers a diploma program in nutrition, which encompasses a broad range of foundations in biological sciences as well as some Complementary and Alternative practices.

The Diploma Program in Applied Holistic Nutrition includes 19 courses, amounting to a total of 564.5 in-class hours. Additionally, the program requires a mandatory 140-hour co-op placement, ensuring that students gain practical experience in the field.

What CNPs Can Do:

CNPs are equipped to offer a diverse range of nutrition services, including weight loss and overall health improvement. They specialize in enhancing meal structures and tailoring nutritional habits to meet individual needs. CNPs understand the importance of personalized nutrition and, while they do not diagnose or treat illnesses, they can recognize nutritional issues and make safe recommendations.

CNPs contribute significantly to the healthcare system by improving the general population's health on a client-to-client basis. They work one-on-one with clients to improve their food choices, build balanced plates, and incorporate healthy lifestyle habits. In the realm of sports, CNPs counsel athletes on nutrition from off-season training to game day. They can also lead group sessions, providing educational material that promotes nutritional awareness.

CNPs find employment in various settings, including clinics, retreat centers, and the food industry, where they continue to positively impact health and nutrition. Their extensive training and practical experience enable them to offer a wide range of services, making them valuable contributors to the health care field and holistic health.
